Autograph manuscript log book and album of photographs relating to an Alaskan cruise of the U.S.S. Thetis. Log book entries, most written by Lieutenant Commander William Hemsley Emory, describe departure from New York and progress to South America, the west coast of the United States, and Alaska Territory, Feb 16, 1887-Jul 27, 1888. Entries dated in May, 1888, include description of gold mining operations and American Indian life near Yakutat Bay, Alaska Territory. Tipped in are two drawings, a photograph, and ca. ten watercolors, apparently by Hemsley, most showing Alaskan islands and coastal topography. Laid in are a photograph of an unidentified landscape and two cloth ribbons with "U.S.S. Petrel" sewn in. The photograph album, titled "Cruise of the 'Thetis,' 1888, W.H. Emory, U.S.N.," contains ca. 180 photographs, many with autograph mansucript captions, some dated 1887-1888, with most undated. Most photographs were taken in Alaska Territory and show scenes of settlements and American Indian life. Also included are several photographs of the raising of the whaling schooner Jane Grey near Point Barrow and a photograph of the disinterment of Charles John Seghers at Saint Michael. Also present are photographs of the Thetis, crew members, and scenes on board ship taken in Alaska Territory, South America, and Mare Island, California. Accompanying the album are two mounted photographs of the Petrel, 1896 and undated, and two mounted photographs of the officers of the Bear, taken at the time of the Greely Relief Expedition, 1884, one with autograph manuscript notes in an unidentified hand on verso.

William Hemsley Emory was born in 1846 in Washington, D.C., and was a son of William Hemsley Emory, 1811-1887, a soldier and topographical engineer with the United States and Mexican Boundary Commission. The younger Emory graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1866, after serving as a midshipman in the Civil War.
